The Health & Safety Cruise Packing List Most Travelers Forget

June 24, 2026 5 min read

Every cruise packing list covers swimsuits and power strips. Far fewer cover the items that matter when something goes wrong — a stomach bug at sea, a twisted ankle in port, or a lost passport in a foreign country. Here's what seasoned travelers pack.

Your onboard medical kit

  • All prescription medications in original containers — pack in your carry-on, never checked luggage, with at least 3 extra days' supply
  • A written list of your medications, doses, and allergies (paper, not just your phone)
  • Motion sickness remedies — even if you've never been seasick
  • Anti-diarrheal medication and oral rehydration salts
  • Pain reliever, antihistamine, and any doctor-recommended antibiotics for travel
  • Bandages, antibiotic ointment, and blister care for port days
  • A small thermometer

Documents and contacts

  • Passport plus a photocopy stored separately (and a photo on your phone)
  • Travel insurance policy number and the insurer's 24-hour emergency line
  • Your ship's emergency contact number for family at home
  • Local emergency numbers and the nearest U.S. Embassy for each port — our Country Intelligence Reports include a wallet-sized emergency contact card for exactly this

Why this matters more after 45

Medical care at sea is capable but limited, and care in foreign ports varies widely. Travelers managing blood pressure, diabetes, heart conditions, or mobility issues have less margin for error when medications are lost or care is delayed. Ten minutes of preparation before you leave home covers the vast majority of what goes wrong on a cruise.
